Dancing with Sea Lions
The Dancing With Sea Lions project began as a fundraiser for the 20th Anniversary of the Florence Events Center. The volunteers of the Florence Arts, Culture, and Entertainment nonprofit group (previously known as the Friends of the FEC) headed up this project in conjunction with the Florence Events Center Staff. Twenty life size sea lion sculptures were each painted by a different artist. All of them were displayed with their sponsors along the Oregon Coast till October of 2016, when they were then purchased by businesses and individuals. Fifteen of them are still publicly displayed in Florence and near by coastal locations. See our 'Where are they now' map for their current locations, and check our blog for updates. Share your Dancing Sea Lion pics with us and we'll add them to our Gallery of images.
Colleen Goodwin-Chronister
Project Name: Porter Performs
Sponsor and Owner: Friends of the Florence Events Center
She has won acclaim for her unique paintings. The works of Colleen Goodwin-Chronister have been collected by patrons across the country as well as included in many private collections. Now she brings her work to the central Oregon Coast.
“Porter Performs” as the title of her Dancing With Sea Lions entry, suggests movement in the various performers portrayed. The design, as in a true performance, is set in theater-style against a stark background with well-lit figures using repeating color harmonies and rippling ribbons of sheet music for dramatic flair to join each scene.
Painting has been Goodwin-Chronister’s passion since the age of eight. She earned her BA and Teaching Credential from California State University Fresno. As a painter whose contemporary realism style allows creation of exquisite oil paintings, her meticulous attention to detail transcends the ordinary and has a distinctive magical quality. Colleen is equally at ease whether it is creating paintings in her studio or large-scale exterior murals.
